Press Releases - Mount Airy Casino Resort
The historic Cal Neva Resort & Casino in North Lake Tahoe — the site of many party nights with Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland as well as one suicide attempt by Marilyn Monroe — is going to be reborn, though possibly not under that name, at the hands of Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison. SFist reported on Ellison's purchase of the 13-acre property back in October 2017, which he bought for a reported .6 million after developer Criswell Radovan filed for bankruptcy amid a costly renovation. The renovation — which was never finished after workers walked off the job due to non-payment of wages in mid-2016 — was said to have cost million. Now, as the SF Business Times reports, Ellison's team is getting set to submit a proposal for the site which includes possibly demolishing all or most of the existing lodge and casino, and renovating the 10-story, 200-room hotel tower that was added to the complex in the late 1960s.

The team tells the Business Times that they plan to build "a new two-story structure that brings together lodging, restaurants, a casino, conference center, spa and other facilities under one roof."The historic resort, which straddles the state line between California and Nevada, was originally built in 1926, and significantly renovated in the early 1960s by new owners Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Chicago mobster Sam Giancana. Throughout the 60s, per Wikipedia, Sinatra threw lavish parties with the likes of Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Kim Novak, Shirley Mac Laine, Sammy Davis Jr., Tony Curtis, Janet Leigh, Lucille Ball, and Desi Arnaz. And infamously, Marilyn Monroe was put up there for a weekend in August 1962, one week prior to her death, by Robert Kennedy, and she attempted suicide by taking pills and then called the front desk to tell them.

Ellison's team said they plan to commemorate the resort's history through photo displays. In addition to this resort — opening date TBA — Ellison also owns the 86-room Epiphany Hotel in downtown Palo Alto, as well as estates in Malibu and Tahoe, and the entire Hawaiian island of Lanai, which is home to two Four Seasons resorts. 76ers star Ben Simmons is accusing an Australian casino of racial profiling, following claims that he and his friends were denied entry into the establishment Monday. Simmons, who was raised in Australia, took the social media route to charge Melbourne’s Crown Casino with discrimination, saying he felt “singled out” after he and two of his black friends were asked for identification, while one of their white friends was not. Wow, we got a long way to go,” Simmons said in a video, showing the security members allegedly responsible. A spokeswoman for the casino refutes the charge, claiming Simmons wasn’t prevented from entering. “Crown strenuously rejects reports that it discriminated against a group of visitors last night,” the statement said. “Crown’s internal security policy requires our security officers to check identification of those persons they believe to be under the age of 25, this is an enhanced safeguard to ensure that no one under the age of 18 is permitted entry to the Casino Floor as required by Law.

“The group subsequently provided identification and were permitted entry. Crown is an inclusive workplace.” Simmons, 23, responded with his own statement Tuesday, reiterating his claim. “As you know an incident happened (Monday) night at Crown and my friends and I felt personally singled out,” Simmons tweeted. I am very passionate about equality and I will always speak up even if it means having uncomfortable conversations.” Simmons recently signed the most lucrative sports contract by an Australian after receiving a five-year, $170 million contract extension from the 76ers.

2020 wasn’t the most comfortable year due to many factors, which is, obviously, the world pandemic caused by the spread of coronavirus. Especially in the first half of the year, we knew nothing about the infamous virus and couldn’t make any plans. The first World Poker Tour (WPT) event of 2019 – the $10,000 buy-in WPT Gardens Poker Championship – began with 253 players, but the field is now down to the final table of six.
However, they will have to wait until Tuesday, March 12 to see who walks away with the 8,825 top prize. That’s because the final six players, who are guaranteed 0,225 in prize money, will be on hiatus until March 12, which is when they’ll head to Las Vegas to play down to a winner at the Hyper X Esports Arena at the Luxor Hotel & Casino. Frank Stepuchin (pictured above) is way out in front with a more than 2:1 chip lead over his next closest competition.

However, his path to victory won’t be easy as he’ll have to contend with the likes of Shannon Shorr, Steve Sung, Brent Roberts, and the short-stacked Ray Qartomy and Jonathan Abdellatif. Among those to cash the tournament but fall short of making Day 4 were Saya Ono (21st - $21,780), Mohsin Charania (25th - $19,120), Ankush Mandavia (27th - $19,120), Kitty Kuo (28th - $19,120), and Tuan Phan (32nd - $19,120). According to live updates from the event, Day 4 saw 19 players return to action, which meant a baker’s dozen would hit the rail before the final table was set. Dayron Huertas-Carballo, a Gardens Casno qualifier, was the first to fall after getting his short stack all in with ace-queen and failing to hold against Jonathan Abdellatif’s five-four suited after the latter flopped trip fives. From there, the eliminations stacked up including Jerry Humphrey (18th - $25,225), Ubaid Habib (17th - $25,225), Cedric Darrett (16th - $29,705), Allen Pock (15th - $29,705), Mauricio Salazar (14th - $35,550), Team RIU’s Ricky Guan (13th - $35,550), Qing Liu (12th - $43,220), and the last WPT champ in the field Marvin Rettenmaier (11th - $43,220). Rettenmaier fell in Level 21 (10,000/15,000/15,000) when he raised the button to 110,000, leaving himself just 15,000 behind. Abdellatif then moved all in holding the and Rettenmaier called off with the .
The board ran out and Rettenmaier was sent packing. From there Vince Salvatore (10th - $53,385), Peter Cross (9th - $53,385), and Garrett Greer (8th - $66,955) all fell to bring about the final table bubble.
